Eluru: CPI state secretary K Ramakrishna announced that a seminar on the Dalits problems in the state would be held in Vijayawada on July 31. He said that the seminar will be attended by leaders of all Left parties and various Dalit associations.
Speaking to The Hans India here on Sunday, Ramakrishna said that the seminar would discuss the harassment of Dalits, Garagaparru episode and related issues.

The CPI leader along with a team of his party leaders visited Garagaparru in Palakoderu mandal on Sunday and interacted with the Dalits in the village. The Dalits told the CPI team that even after three months they had not received any assistance from the government except 5 kg rice to each family. The other benefits announced by the government officials and leaders so far were not fulfilled, they complained.

Later, the CPI state secretary said that even after three months there was no change in the lives of the Dalits of Garagaparru. They have no work as on today and the main issue which led to the social boycott of the colony, the Ambedkar statue, was also not restored to its old place.

“In the surface, everything looks fine. But upper-caste people are not calling Dalits to work, even though this is the agriculture season. They have not returned the tenancy lands to the earlier tenants. The people want of food, utensils and other essential commodities,” he observed.

Ramakrishna consoled the family of Yakob, the main witness and complainant in the social boycott case, who died in a road accident near the Garagaparru a week ago. He handed over Rs 10,000 to the family for its immediate needs. Muppalla Lakshmana Rao, former MLC Jalli Wilson, West Godavari district unit secretary Dega Prabhakar were other members of the team.
