​Srikakulam: Central and State governments have proposed to establish a research centre to study root cause of kidney diseases.

For the last three decades, Central and state government medical authorities, several universities across the country and abroad conducted number of studies to find root cause for kidney diseases particularly in Uddanam area and concluded that the presence of silica in ground water might be a reason.

In the wake of Jana Sena chief, Pawan Kalyan visit, the state and Central governments initiated efforts to find a solution for the kidney ailments. Potable drinking water supply scheme was started in all 176 kidney disease-affected villages. Three dialysis units were opened at Sompeta, Palasa and Tekkali hospitals and recently state Cabinet gave its nod to pay Rs 2,500 as monthly pension for kidney patients.

In addition to the above measures both state and Central governments have proposed to start a research centre in the district to find out root cause for the problem. Every year government would allot Rs 5 crore to run the research centre. It should be recalled that tests were conducted in 176 villages in seven Uddanam mandals and 13,093 are suffering from kidney diseases. Out of the total 13,093 patients 700 patients condition is critical as they need dialysis regularly.

“Government proposed research centre to study kidney diseases but location is yet to decided,” said district coordinator for health services (DCHS), Dr Boddepalli Surya Rao told The Hans India. “We have received information on proposal of research centre with support of Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) and a detailed project report (DPR) is prepared prepare,” informed district medical and health officer (DM&HO) Dr Sanapala Tirupathi Rao.
