Srikakulam: In further development towards establishing a nuclear power plant (NPP) at Kovvada village in Ranastalam mandal, the government handed over 485 acres of land to the Nuclear Power Corporation of India limited (NPCIL). The formal procedure was completed at the Ranastalam tahsildar’s office on Wednesday.

The NPP has been proposed at Kovvada village three decades ago and related works have been speeded up after the NDA government assumed power at the Centre and the TDP in the State in 2014. Total required land for the NPP is 2,074 acres in seven villages Kovvada, Ramachandrapuram, Gudem, Kotapalem, Maruvada, Tekkali and Jeerukovvada in Ranastalam mandal.

Out of the total required land, assigned lands are 684, government lands are 791 and private lands are 599 acres.
Out of the 791 acres of government land, 485 acres has been handed over to NPCIL as part of first phase. Out of the 485 acres, payments have been made for 126 acres as compensation for encroachment of government lands under rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) package and remaining 359 acres land is un-encroached.

However, the issue is yet to be resolved regarding 306 acres of encroached government lands. The State government declared Rs 18 lakh per acre for private land and assigned lands and Rs 9 lakh for encroached lands.

While Srikakulam revenue divisional officer (RDO) Balivada Dayanidhi and Ranastalam tahsildar Sanapala Sriramulu were discussing on handing over land with NPCIL chief engineer G Venkata Ramesh and Human Resource Manager S Chandra Sekhar, residents of Kovvada and other villages rushed to the tahsildar’s office under the aegis of Mandal Praja Parishat

president Gorle Vijayakumar and Kovvada village sarpanch Mylapalli Polisu and tried to obstruct the process by demanding that the R&R payments should be cleared. However, the officials assured payments and pacified them. After the completion of handing over of the lands, the NPCIL and revenue officials performed puja as part of the tradition on the hilly area near Kovvada village and installed boards symbolically.
