He participated in a first meeting of ‘District Action Plan for Drought Proofing,’ a programme designed by central government for evolving a permanent solution for drought. He spoke to the officials of four districts on the steps to be taken for drought proofing. To arrive at a conclusion, the Joint Secretary said 10 to 15 years data was analysed and selected 24 districts across the country during the first phase.

Among them, four each are in Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan while 16 are in Karnataka. Among the four districts in AP, apart from Chittoor, Prakasam, Kurnool and Anantapur. The drought proofing plans for the next five years are to be submitted before August 31 to the state’s Disaster Management department. Joint Collectors will act as nodal officers in the districts.

The district officials were advised to motivate the farmers to use drip irrigation and choosing the crop according to the water availability etc.

Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture (CRIDA) principal scientist and nodal officer Dr KV Rao said that the plans should be realistic keeping in view the future of the people. The rainfall in the district during the last five years, details of crops, medium and small farmers, land fertility, water availability, projects, crop situation in Rabi, Kharif, check dams etc are to be presented in detail. Based on these details the long-term plans are to be formulated.

The next meeting will be held in September after the action plans are received by August 31, in which they will be evaluated and final action plan will be formulated by December which has to be submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office. Joint Collector-2 VR Chandramouli and other officials were present.
