Anantapur: District Water Management Agency(DWMA) has embarked on an ambitious programme of building 12,483 individual latrines-cum-bathrooms in 100 hours. The marathon building of 12,000 latrines which was launched on July 26 will be completed on July 30.

As many as 1 lakh NREGS labourers will ensure the completion of individual latrines on the fifth day of launching the innovative idea. The building of individual latrines had been launched under the Swachh Bharath Mission.

Out of 36,217 latrines sanctioned under the mission, 12,000 latrines are being built by DWMA while the rest are being built by the Department of Rural Water Supply. In 2 days, the DWMA already completed building of 2,000 latrines as part of its marathon mission.

Another 10,483 latrines are in progress and are poised for completion by Sunday.DWMA Project Director ANagabhushanam told 'The Hans India' that an innovative approach was floated by him to make the builders complete them on a mission mode and to create a sense of urgency and hence the 5-day marathon building programme.

He said that first time the NREGS programme is linked to the scheme and the labour involved to impress upon the concept of Swachh Bharath which is clean and green villages.A beneficiary by name Naganna Naik of Kalyandurgam mandal is elated at his lavatory being completed in just 2 days.

He said the 100-hour programme has become a talk in the villages triggering interest in availing the scheme and District Collector Veera Pandian's resolve to declare all villages in the district as open defecation-free very soon.

All 63 mandals have been included in the scheme of building individual latrines. The Assembly constituencies of Dharmavaram, Guntakal, Hindupur, Kadiri, Kalyandurgam,Madakasira, Rayadurg,Penukonda, Puttaparthi, Raptadu, Singanamala, Tadipatri,Uravakonda and Anantapur have been covered under the 100-hour programme.
