Visakhapatnam: Well known film director Geethakrishna, who directed blockbusters like Sankeertana, Kokila and Keechurallu, is making serious efforts to revive stage plays in the two Telugu speaking States. It is known that with the advent of cinema, theatres which hosted stage plays, both mythological and social dramas, were shut down leaving the artistes in penury.

“Now people showing more interest in stage plays as they are fed up with the boring movies. Random street plays and drama festivals are attracting youth and I hope it is time to revive drama in a big and popularise it,’’ said Geethakrishna, who is now running Geetha Krishna International Film Schools at Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Hyderabad.

Speaking to The Hans India here on Friday, he said that the students from his school drawn from these three cities would be staging plays for two days on August 5 and August 6 during World Telugu Federation celebrations being held at Chennai. He said he was sure of getting good response from the people coming from different continents.

It may be recalled that Kanyasulkam in which film actors JV Somayajulu and JV Ramana Murthy enacted few years ago here was a huge success. The play was to be held for a day but due to public demand, it was extended for another day.

Similarly, Theatre of Absurd organised by actor Somya Bollapragada during supper time at a star hotel was also a success.
Geethakrishna said plenty of talent was available in villages, towns and cities. One has to organise the plays at regular intervals to encourage the youth. he added ``I am sure people will take their eyes off TV screens and actively participate in the dramas,’’ the director said.
