Visakhapatnam: The police officials sounded red alert in the Agency areas following beginning of Maoists’ Martyrs Week on Friday. Special armed police personnel fanned out for combing operations in different parts.

The alert has been sounded for all the 11 Agency mandals. Concentration is more in Chintapalli, GK Veedi, Sileru, Dumbriguda and villages bordering Odisha. The martyrs’ week will conclude on August 3. Police sources said the Maoists are likely to hold memorial meetings and rallies.

In this regard, the Maoists are planning to paste posters on the village walls and distribute pamphlets in the villages on various issues and to appeal them to participate in the meetings. Meanwhile the police teams began campaigning in the villages against the Maoists activities.

The police put up check posts at different villages and keeping an eye on the suspicious persons. But sofar no arrests were made. The villagers are terrorised due to appearance of armed police personnel.Some youths fled to plain areas anticipating police harassment, sources said.
