Rajamahendravaram: Purushottapatnam Lift Irrigation Scheme (PPLIS) is coming to a reality in the month of August this year and the project is coming up with an estimated cost of Rs 1,638 crore at Purushottapatnam village of Sitanagaram mandal in East Godavari district.

The project was aimed to supply water for cultivation to two lakh acres in East Godavari and Visakhapatnam districts along with catering to the needs of drinking and industrial needs. In the first phase as many as 3,500 cusecs of water will be drafted from river Godavari into Polavaram Left Main Canal (LMC) at Nelakota village in a distance of 10 kms from the project area. From there 1,400 cusecs of water will be sent to Visakhapatnam through Yeleru reservoir.

The project is aimed to supply water for cultivation in two lakh acres in East Godavari and Visakhapatnam districts along with catering to the needs of drinking and industries

According to LMC superintending engineer S Sugunakar Rao, Visakhapatnam city needs 200 Million Gallons of water per day. Of it, 40 Million gallons of water is to be earmarked for steel plant, 60 Million gallons of water for the residents of the city, 80 Million gallons of water for cultivation and 20 Million gallons of water for other needs.

At present as much as 125 million gallons of water is being supplied to Visakhapatnam from Tadipudi and Katheru Lift Irrigation Schemes from East Godavari district.

As many as 203 acres of land was acquired for the project for which the government sanctioned an amount of Rs 1,638 crore in this regard. The storage capacity of PPLIS is 140 cusecs. Fourteen pumps will be laid in two phases in a length of 80 kms from PLIS site to Yeleru reservoir.

While Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu inspects the progress of works on Monday, Sub-collector VVVR Raju is supervising the progress of works every day, he added.
