Srikakulam: BC Welfare Minister K Atchannaidu on Saturday said all measures would be taken to protect paddy nurseries by supplying water through motors and tankers.

Speaking at the ZP general body meeting here on Saturday, the Minister also directed the irrigation officials to maintain strict vigil on canal bunds to avoid wastage of water.

The minister made these comments when the members raised hue and cry over lack of proper irrigation facilities in most of the mandals. The members also pointed out paddy nurseries are going dry in the wake of continuous dry spell in the district.

MLAs and Zilla Parishat Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) members also brought to the notice of collector that most of the mandal level officers are not attending meetings and reviews at mandal-level.

The Minister and Collector K Dhanunjaya Reddy expressed serious concern over skipping of officials for meetings and warned of disciplinary action.

In addition to existing two Rythu bazaars in the district, the Minister said five more Rythu bazaars proposed to be set up and directed officials to identify suitable sites.

He also said the government allotted Rs 100 crore for revival of sick industries in the district and in addition to it another Rs 27 crore was released for revival of sugar factory in Amudalavalasa.
