Kurnool: District Medical and Health Officer Y Narasimhulu appealed to people to administer measles and rubella vaccines to their children. He said the South-East Asia Regional Countries have resolved to eradicate measles and congenital rubella syndrome by 2020. He said measles is a highly infectious disease affecting the children.

It is estimated that one-third of children die in India due to the deadly disease every year. Rubella is a mild viral infection affecting both children as well as adults. If rubella infection occurs during pregnancy it can cause severe lifelong disabilities to child and a huge socio-economic burden to the family and society, said Narasimhulu.

He said the DMHO office has made all arrangements for the vaccination drive in the district. He said there are around 87 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and 542 Sub-Centres are functioning in the district. Sufficient doses of vaccination have been supplied to these centres.

He said the education department officials’ services would be utilised in vaccination drive. The vaccination camp would be launched officially on August 1 and it will continue up to September 2.

He appealed to all the parents to utilise the vaccination camps and save their children from falling prey to the deadly diseases. District Immunisation Officer (DIO) Venkata Ramana and other Medical and Health Department staff were present.
