Vijayawada: Former CPM city secretary and convener of the CRDA co-ordination committee Ch Baburao on Monday refuted the statement made by IT Minister N Lokesh that Vijayawada city was not developed due to the agitations carried on by the Communists over the years. Lokesh’s statement that the Communists were responsible for the backwardness of Vijayawada city sparked a fierce debate here.

Baburao alleged the TDP government failed on all fronts with regard to the development of the city. During the last three years, he said the TDP had not constructed a single house for the poor under the Prime Minister Awaz Yojana Scheme and failed to complete Durga flyover temple construction works.

He said the TDP government was not even completing the construction of 5,000 unfinished houses, which were built under the JNNURM in the city for allotting to the poor. The Government failed to solve the problems of two lakh people living on the hill areas and not regularising the house site pattas, he added.

Babu Rao alleged the TDP Government was handing over prime government lands to foreign companies and added that efforts were on to lease the PWD ground to a Chinese firm. He further said proposals have been made to shift the VMC main office building from one town to some other location and handover the land to private parties.

Baburao reminded Lokesh that shopping complexes worth crores of rupees were constructed in the city and many roads and parks developed during the Left party rule.

He said hill areas and many slums witnessed development on a large scale during the Communist rule. Vijayawada Central MLA and TDP leader Bonda Umamaheswara Rao has alleged the Communists created hurdles for the development of the city and said that there was nothing wrong on the part of the IT Minister Nara Lokesh in criticising the two Communist parties.

Rao said the people of Vijayawada defeated the Communists in the 2014 Vijayawada Municipal Corporation elections because they were creating obstacles for the progress of the city.

He said the Communists gradually lost power and only one corporator was elected in the 2014 VMC elections. He said that the Telugu Desam Government has taken up many development works during the last three years and spent Rs 3 crore for the development of ghats, widening of roads and construction of the Durga flyover.
