Visakhapatnam: In a major breakthrough, Central Crime Station (CCS) and III Town police personnel arrested a habitual offender for committing three robberies in Visakhapatnam and also recovered booty worth over Rs 75 lakh from his possession, said CCS ACP Y Govinda Rao on Monday.
According to the sources, the offender has been identified as Pokathota Gangandhar (24) alias Siddarrth, Siddhu and Karthik, son of late Venkata Ramana. Speaking to the media, the CCS ACP said Gangadhar was committing offences since 2011 in the city. He had robbed 1300 gms of gold and Rs 35,000 in cash from a flat at Varsha Apartment in Pandurangapuram when the family members were asleep.
He also committed two other minor offences at Kirlampudi layout and Pandurangapuram. All these three offences took place in the end of May and June, he said.
On a tip-off, the cops caught the accused at Government Women’s College at Gollalapalem in the city on Sunday evening. Explaining about the modus operandi of his thefts, Govinda Rao said Gangadhar was expert in scaling walls and drainage outlet pipes of the apartments and lodges to gain entry into buildings through ventilators and windows.
The CCS ACP said that they have recovered 100 per cent gold ornaments including seven pairs of bangles, eleven bracelets, 18 lockets, 19 necklaces or chains, 13 pairs of ear rings and Rs 3,000 in cash along with other stuff such as two bikes, LED TV and home appliances, which were bought by using the stolen money.
Earlier, in 2013, the accused had committed thefts at Sakethi Residency opposite Jyothi Theatre, Orange Hotel near Sarawathi Park, Prince Hotel near Dabagardens and Vizag Hotel at Diamond Park. He was convicted in five cases under the II town police station in 2014.
CCS Inspector A Paradha Saradhi, East Sub-Division crimes inspector K Rama Rao, Dwaraka Sub-Division Crimes Inspector Ch Shanmukha Rao, III Town SI A Hari Krishna, CCS SI V Appala Naidu and other cops took part in the press meet.
