Tirupati: Bringing regional issues to the fore, students of Rayalaseema have intensified their stir against the state government and getting solidarity from various sections of the society. They chose Tirupati to highlight their demands and sat on 48-hour fast from July 29 to 31. Speaking to The Hans India, Rayalaseema Students Union (RSU) state president V Ravi Sankar Reddy said that they are protesting to fulfil two main demands.
The demands include withdrawal of GO 67, which includes Sri City in Nellore Urban Development Authority (NUDA) taking it away from Rayalaseema. This is against the interests of people of this backward region, he said. The second demand was that all the vacancies in TTD be filled immediately with Rayalaseema candidates only by issuing a government order related to zonal system.
Already, the RSU is fighting on various problems relating to Rayalaseema. They organised a round table conference and other protests against the GO 67. They are taking other student unions along with them to make their voice heard. The RSU leaders say that Sri City is the legitimate right of the Rayalaseema people and it should be in this region only. The farmers of Rayalaseema gave 7,000 acres for Sri City and any efforts to take away from the region would be dealt with strongly.
Expressing his anguish on the state government, former MP Chinta Mohan, who visited the camp on Monday, said that the government has no humanity. After coming into power with false promises, it was shifting all resources to Amaravati in the name of development. The government is doing huge injustice to Rayalaseema.
He stressed that once Dugarajapatnam Port becomes a reality, close to three lakh jobs would come to the region especially to Chittoor and Kadapa districts. Congress government has sanctioned Rs 1 lakh crore worth developmental works in the region but the present government has poured water on every scheme like International Cricket Stadium and Institute of Cancer Research. The RSU leaders got massive support from the student fraternity.
Also, several leaders including writer and doctor from Proddatur in Kadapa district Dr MV Ramana Reddy, Bhuman, who fights on Rayalaseema issues, Rayalaseema Intellectual Forum convenor M Purushotham Reddy and Rayalaseema Porata Samithi convenor P Naveen Kumar Reddy have visited the camp at TTD Administrative Building where they went on fast and expressed their solidarity with them.
Notably, BJP leader K Santha Reddy also visited the camp. The RSU leaders Pamuleti, Subbareddy, Raghurami Reddy, Subbarayudu, Krishna Reddy, Rajakumar and Venumadhav Reddy among others, who participated in the fast.
On Monday, Chinta Mohan offered them orange juice marking the end of their protest. Ravi Sankar Reddy said that they are planning to meet TTD EO next week to pursue their demands further. Based on the reaction, they will consider the call for ‘Chalo Tirupati’ agitation. Similarly, to protest against GO 67, the RSU is going to give a call for ‘Chalo Amaravati’ soon.
