33% suffer from kidney diseases in Uddanam

Srikakulam: On an average one-third (33 per cent) population is suffering from kidney diseases in Uddanam in the district.

The medical teams led by NTR Health University (NTRHU) Vice-Chancellor Dr Ravi Raj conducted medical tests in 74 affected villages covering 50,000 population. In Jagathi village in Kaviti mandal, 46.7 per cent of population is being affected followed by Pathavaraka village with 43.5 per cent, 35-30 per cent in another 18 villages, 18 per cent in 54 villages.

According to medical and health department sources, the teams had covered 51,593 population in another 102 villages in 7 Uddanam mandals also. In the 102 villages, Palasa and Sompeta urban areas covered where no kidney patient was detected. In MS Palli, Karthali, Kirthala, Buragam, Sasanam, Gokarnapuram, Benkili, Saradapuram, Baruva and Palasapuram villages only one or two cases detected.

“Instead of conducting tests in 74 villages, the government should have initiated steps to prevent the disease,” said noted environmentalist and doctor Yaradi Krishna Murthy to The Hans India. With an aim to show low percentage of patients another 102 villages were added for medical tests after some days gap, he elaborated.

“We have conducted medical tests based on the representations from people. There is no intention to show low percentage of patients in the survey”, said District Medical and Health Officer Dr Sanapala Tirupathi Rao to The Hans India.
