Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam (SPMVV) celebrated the 3rd National Handloom day on the varsity premises here on Monday. The programme was initiated by the Department of Communication and Journalism. All the women staff of the varsity wore colourful handloom sarees to show solidarity and support to the handloom industry.

Tirupati: Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam (SPMVV) celebrated the 3rd National Handloom day on the varsity premises here on Monday. The programme was initiated by the Department of Communication and Journalism. All the women staff of the varsity wore colourful handloom sarees to show solidarity and support to the handloom industry.

It was a colorful scene with Professors wearing Venkatagiri, Gadwal, Pochampally, Mangalagiri, Uppada and Narayanapet handloom saris, the popular handlooms of AP. SPMVV Vice-Chancellor (V-C) Prof V Durga Bhavani said that handlooms are an integral part of the culture and tradition of India and we carry our heritage with us, when we wear handlooms.

Rector Prof V Uma said that the University staff could wear more of handloom sarees to support the struggling weaver's community. In this connection, the V-C appealed to all the staff to wear handlooms at least once in a month. It was a lively gathering at the NTR Statue in the varsity where the women Professors shared light hearted banter about handloom saris, their favorite handlooms and colours.
