Speaking at various meetings held in SVIMS and SV Medical College, here on Monday, Naidu said that he was very happy to have his first official programme after being elected to the second highest constitutional post of the country in the pilgrim city Tirupati, the abode of Lord Venkateswara.

“A wealthy nation cannot become a healthy nation but a healthy nation can always be a wealthy nation,” he quipped. He sought to advise the medical fraternity to treat every patient as VIP (Very Important Patient) and extend the best possible treatment at right time.

“Country needs 10.6 lakh doctors but it has only 6.5 lakh doctors. What India spends on health care goods and services is far less than what the developed nations or even some developing nations spent. While the developed nations spend, around 18 per cent of GDP on health care India spend only 4.2 per cent of GDP.

The nation should have a relook at this. In urban areas, only 32 per cent of the people visit public hospitals, while the rest 68 per cent visit private hospitals. The doctors in the public sector should think of this seriously,” the V-P elect suggested.

Earlier, he inaugurated Rs.18 crore worth Sri Padmavathi Medical College for Women’s (SPMC-W) Hostel, which accommodates 288 students. He also laid foundation stone for seven building projects of SVIMS-SPMC(W) worth Rs.74.76 crores funded by the state government which includes, construction of the 2nd phase of hostel building for another 288

students, nurses quarters, residents accommodation, professors accommodation and others. Minister for health Dr Kamineni Srinivas, vice-chancellor of SVIMS Dr TS Ravi Kumar, SVMC principal Dr NV Ramanaiah, district collector PS Pradyumna, MLA M Suguna and MLC G Sreenivasulu were present.
