Visakhapatnam: The Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) is gearing up for distribution of 15,000 clay Ganesh idols in the city ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi. The APPCB has made elaborate arrangements to kick off a campaign for creating awareness among the students in several schools about importance of eco-friendly idols.
“With the help of National Green Corps (NGC), the eco-friendly Ganesha idols of nine inches to one feet size, along with pamphlets, will be distributed in schools, make-shift shops and Rythu Bazars free of cost in the city,” said R Lakshmi Narayana, environmental engineer of APPCB.
According to the officials, those who are planning to install Ganesha idols in the pandals in the city should obtain permission from the city police. “If any person or organisation is found to be violating the norms, the cops would take strict action,” he said.
According to the Supreme Court order, there is restriction on noise-levels that need to be maintained at Ganesha pandals. Loud speaker or a public-address system should not be used during the nights between 10 pm and 6 am.
“As there is no ban on the use of Plaster of Paris Ganesha idols in the state, we want to make the public understand about the benefits of clay idols,” said the APPCB environmental engineer. It may be note that NGOs were distributing the clay Ganesha idols to the devotees in the city.
