Tirupati: After eight years of long-wait, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will inaugurate houses for urban poor at Avilala on August 14 evening. Construction of houses was delayed due to political reasons like state bifurcation. The then Congress government sanctioned houses for homeless poor in 2008. The construction of houses was completed with the efforts of previous Municipal Commissioner V Vinay Chand and present incumbent C Hari Kiran.

The Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) took loans from HUDCO and nationalised banks for the construction of 8,000 houses. The MCT had spent Rs 200 crore for the construction of houses. The construction of houses was taken up under the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme (IHSDP) and Basic Service to Urban Poor (BSUP). The Chief Minister will hand over keys to select beneficiaries at a function to be held on August 15.

The civic body spent Rs 3.4 lakh for construction of each unit and 504 houses are ready for occupation. In these, 144 houses were reserved for municipal workers, who are residing in Scavengers Colony. Speaking to The Hans India, a beneficiary Varalakshmi expressed her happiness for becoming an owner of a house after waiting for 8 years.

“I am happy with the facilities provided by the civic body,” elated Varalakshmi said. Hari Krishna stated that the MCT will provide new houses in a phased manner for all the homeless poor in the city. He stated that 10 acres site was identified at Kottur village under the limits of Tirupati Rural mandal for construction of another 6,000 new houses.
