Anantapur: The hallmarking of all gold and silver jewellery being sold is mandatory, with the Parliament passing the BIS Bill and sending it for President's assent. All gold and silver ornament shops and goldsmiths are required to get all their products hallmarked by the local Bureau of Indian Standards(BIS) and also obtain licenses for their shops,

according to Chakrapani, president of Telangana State Consumers Coordination Council, district council president Satish Bhopalam and BIS hall marking centre CEO Penakacherla Gopi. There are six corporate gold malls, 20 wholesale shops, 300 small gold ornaments shops apart from 3000 gold smiths who engage in making gold and silver jewellery in the city.

In a press statement, Chakrapani said that in the past hallmarking was an option but now it is mandatory. Also, action will be taken against those who mix the banned metal Ruthunia Helium which causes cancer when the metal comes into contact with human body. If any trader failed to comply with the law, his license would be cancelled, he would be fined and also sent to jail, he informed.

Consumers can visit the BIS office and get their purchased jewellery tested to know the gold percentage of the ornament. After creating awareness on the issue if the traders failed to comply with the law, BIS would conduct raids on the jewellery shops.

Chakrapani said that under the central scheme ' PM Kaushal Vikas Yojana' gold smiths are given training in craftmanship of making ornaments and also skill development in this regard. He called upon the gold smiths to improve their trade skills and remove all apprehensions that the government would impose heavy GST taxes on them.

District Consumer Council President Satish Bhoopala called upon all the gold and silver merchants and jewellery makers to comply with the new Hallmark Law and come forward to give the best quality ornaments to the consumers. If they have doubts over anything the consumers council and the local BIS centre would give clarity on all their doubts.
