Chittoor: The prime agenda of Chittoor Municipal Corporation (CMC) seems to demolish the old buildings without constructing new ones in their places. The 40-year-old Kasu Brahmananda Reddy (KBR) Municipal Bus Station was demolished three months ago with an action plan to construct a five-storey Municipal Shopping Complex with an outlay of Rs 5 crore. It may be recalled here the CMC demolished Indian Red Cross Society Building two years ago.

  • The 40-year-old Brahmananda Reddy Municipal Bus Station is demolished three months ago to construct a five-storey municipal complex with an outlay of Rs 5 crore
  • At present, the demolished bus station was encroached upon by autos and fruit selling vendors

The 60-year-old Mahatma Gandhi statue was demolished long ago with a view to construct a Statue Island at Gandhi Circle. Apart from it, the CMC emptied the Kattamanchi Tank for its beautification with an estimated budget of Rs 3 crore. Then Forest Minister B Gopalakrishna Reddy laid foundation stone for the beautification project of Kattamanchi Tank two years ago.

It is regretted that no action has been taken by the CMC either to reconstruct the Indian Red Cross Society Building, Statue Island, Shopping Complex or taking up beautification of Kattamanchi Tank. Due to emptying of the existing water in Kattamanchi Tank, groundwater levels in the surrounding areas have fallen drastically resulting in dried up of several borewells.

The demolished Brahmananda Reddy Bus Station was presently encroached upon by autos, fruit selling vendors, tribals and others where the sanitation was highly neglected. During nights, the vacated bus stand is being used as public toilet and become a haven for anti-social activities.

It is learnt the municipal administration seems to have turned a blind eye in fulfilling the aspirations of people with the active support of ruling TDP leaders in all respects. Speaking to The Hans India here on Wednesday, Municipal Commissioner G Balasubramanyam admitted the lapses of CMC in several aspects due to various reasons. “We have several plans to develop Chittoor city as a model one.

Our hands are tied-up in certain matters. However, the stage has been set for constructing a Municipal Shopping Complex. Several nationalised banks have come forward to offer loan facility in this regard,” he added.
