Anantapur: Rural Housing and I & PR Minister Kalava Srinivasulu on Wednesday called upon farmers to take up cultivation of millets and other short-term crops in the light of failure of monsoon and precarious drought conditions prevailing in the district. Addressing the media at the Roads and Buildings Guest House here, the Minister called upon farmers not to take up cultivation of paddy and groundnut dependent upon HLC and Handri Neeva canal waters.

With no normal inflows into the Tungabhadra dam and the reservoirs in the district have also gone dry, Srinivasulu said the farmers can go for 'Navadanyas' for which seeds will be supplied with 100 per cent subsidy. On an average Rs 5,000 subsidy amount will be given to every farmer.

He said the government was giving Rs 87 crore for the district for extending cent per cent subsidy to those who opt for alternative crops. The TDP will win the Nandyal by-election with flying colours, he stated and added the people have no faith in the 'Nava Ratnalu' announced by the YSRCP president as no one knows whether he would be in jail or get stuck in cases.
