After the High Court comments for delay in conducting elections to the Kakinada Municipal Corporation (KMC), the state government has preparing ground to conduct the elections to all the municipal corporations in the state. As a part of those exercises, the state government issued the GO increasing the GVMC wards to 81.
Telugu Desam Party after coming to power in 2014 performed well in all the civic body elections. However, the state government delayed conducting elections to the municipal corporations on various grounds. The last elected body in the GVMC completed its term in February 2012 and for the last five years the corporation was under special officer’s rule.
The government is facing tough times in the city to solve several issues, including regularisation of Simhachalam lands, incomplete underground drainage system, BRTS Road projects, JNNURM houses, Widening of One Town road from Jagadamba Junction to Old Post Office and pollution levels.
The TDP in 2014 manifesto had assured that the Simhachalam land dispute would be settled in 100 days and elections to the GVMC would be conducted in three months after coming to power. Earlier, the government has proposed to merger five villages K Nagarampalem, Kapuluppada, Chepaluppada, Nidigattu and JV Agraharam (all close to Bheemili) into the GVMC.
Opposing the proposal, some of the villagers filed cases in the High Court and the court directed the government to roll back such proposals and conduct elections to those gram panchayats. Later, some TDP leaders filed a petition in the High Court against the merger of the Bheemili into GVMC.
"With the directions of the TDP leadership, Visakhapatnam East MLA Velagapudi Ramakrishna Babu's followers filed cases in the High Court to continue the delay in conduct the elections. As per the poll promises, the state government should immediately conduct elections to the GVMC. Showing the court cases, the government is not conducting the elections.
The TDP leaders should withdraw the cases in the High Court and the government should immediately announce the election schedule to the GVMC," CPM Greater Visakhapatnam secretary B Ganga Rao demanded.
