Visakhapatnam: Depriving dignity to a departed soul, villagers of Basudebpalli under Manamunda panchayat of Odisha’s Boudh district on Wednesday refused to carry the body of a man who was infected with leprosy. His son and daughter carried the body to the cremation ground and performed last rites.

Not a single soul from the village turned up when the family members requested them as a part of tradition.“We carried the body on our shoulders to the cremation ground,” said the dead man’s daughter Manjurani Sahoo and son Sanjiv Kumar Sahoo. All the sarpanch did was to give them Rs 2,000 for performing the rite.

“The villagers hated him and never visited him even when he was admitted to the hospital in a serious condition,” Sanjiv said. Many Gandhians and social workers condemned the incident and blamed the government for not sensitising the villagers on some sensitive issues.
