Gollaprolu: The women on Wednesday staged a protest on the Rayavaram road against the establishment of a liquor shop in the residential area.

Mild tension prevailed following an argument between the demonstrators and the police. With traffic on Rayavaram Road came to a standstill following the protest, the police forcibly lifted the activists to clear the traffic.

Learning about site being leveled near the market yard for opening a liquor shop, many women gathered at the site in Gandhi Nagar and resorted to the agitation.

Sub-inspector Sivakrishna had a tough time in regulating the traffic on the road as the women activists did not allow police to streamline the traffic.

Excise officials were asked not to encourage setting up of liquor shops in residential areas but they turned a deaf ear to their pleas, the demonstrators said. The activists stated that they would not yield till an assurance was given to them.

Women would face security problems because of the liquor shop, they said pointing out that the road was mostly being used by college girl students. Miriyala Manikyam, Mamidala Veeramani, Suryavati and Darla Ramana took part in the protest programme.
