According a railway police official, there are about 25 trains which have security during the night hours. A total of 10 e-Beat constables are always alert in trains on the move. They travel up to an assigned destination and return by another train. If necessary, they take instructions from higherups and change routes depending on the requirement.

“Crimes during the morning hours are comparatively less and no need to depute police force. The police force usually board trains during the night, especially from 10 pm to 5 am. As most of the passengers fall asleep during this time, thieves and other criminals are active.

If our constables watch the movement of the travellers, they easily identify the criminals and plunge into action. Criminals caught this way would be handed over to the police at GRP stations on the way. If the criminals are new, they skip the idea of doing a crime at the very sight of the cop. The policeman catches offenders who stop trains by pulling chains and alight at safe points,” the official explained.

The police force covers almost all trains during the night, including GT Express, Tamil Nadu Express, Godavari Express and Gautami Express. The possibility of crimes in the presence of security by constables is little.

At Vijayawada GRP station, about 300 crimes are reported every year. The crimes have changed with the advent of technology. “The mobiles and camera phones have changed the crime scenario in trains. The passengers have been using phones to alert cops and officials on the crime as it happens. The cops are also acting swiftly.

One positive thing about crime in trains on the wane in cases of grave crimes. Theft of bags and other belongings had come down. However, petty crimes like thefts of mobile phones when passengers were not alert are on the rise,” says the official.
