Visakhapatnam: Energy, Infrastructure and Investment Principal Secretary Ajay Jain said that the state government would install 40 lakh LED streetlights in nearly 13,000 villages across the state as part of saving energy in a big way.
Speaking at a two-day national workshop for State Designated Agencies (SDA) organised by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in collaboration with AP Energy Conservation Mission here on Friday, Ajay Jain said with the setting up of LED streetlights in all gram panchayats by March 2019, estimated energy savings per year was pegged at 444 million units (MU) and the net benefit would be Rs 669 crore over 10 years.
He added in the last three years energy conservation and efficiency had taken a new dimension. Giving utmost importance to agriculture sector, the State government has been distributing one lakh energy efficient solar pump sets to farmers at free of cost for replacing inefficient and energy intensive pump sets, he said.
“This initiative will be taken up in a phased manner across the state and the government is determined to bring into use 15 lakh energy efficient pump sets,” he noted. In case of domestic sector, nearly 2.4 crore LED bulbs covering all households in 13 districts have been distributed and 6 lakh LED lights were installed in 110 municipalities since October 2014, according to Ajay Jain.
He recalled in Visakhapatnam alone post-Hudhud cyclone, 96,000 LED streetlights have been put in place resulting in 40 per cent energy savings and financial saving of Rs 423 lakh for the civic body.
Pointing out that household electricity consumption has a significant energy efficiency potential of around 30 per cent, he said the government intended to make “Energy Efficient Homes” by distributing one crore LED tube lights, 50 lakh LED bulbs, 20 lakh five-star rated fans at a competitive cost than market price.
