Vijayawada: Though there is a staff crunch at the maternity block of Old Government Maternity Hospital (GMH), the number of patients visiting the hospital is on the rise. Thanks, to good treatment is being provided at the hospital to the poor pregnant women. The government is also providing protein diet for lactating mothers and services to the newborns at the hospital which is on par with private maternity hospitals in the city.

The GMH block is provided with two units with 30 beds each and each unit has a chief medical officer, three assistant professors, one associate professor, senior resident doctors, PGs and house-surgeons besides paramedical staff. At present, they have 200 beds in the GMH and the same staff is attending to all the patients daily giving their best, said Government Doctors Association's Siddhartha Medical College Unit president Dr Vittal Rao.

The GMH was still functioning with two units, which were set up decades ago, though the number of beds have been increased there is no raise in staff strength, pointed out Dr Vittal Rao.

He said that GMH has various specialities like Special New-born Care Unit (SNCU) sponsored by National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), which has 60 beds which include five cradles and 20 sanctioned beds, which are giving best services equipped with four ventilators, which would have a SNCU medical officer, nodal officer and HoD paediatric besides SR, PG and nursing staff.

The Thalli-Bidda Express scheme was introduced by the state government under which the mother and the newborn would be dropped at their home free of cost.Under the Sishu Surakshana Yogana (SSY) scheme, a kit bag, hand wash, towel, mosquito net and baby carrier are being given free to the mother of newborn.Under the Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK), high protein diet like leafy vegetables, three fruits a day, curd, egg, rice and curry would be provided besides bread and milk.
