A woman Tirupatamma (19) of Vambay Colony attempted suicide by jumping into Eluru canal when here husband failed to fulfil a small request to accompany her to a movie here on Sunday. Her husband, Raja Reddy, also jumped in a bid to rescue her. However, both started drowning as they cannot swim.

Vijayawada: A woman Tirupatamma (19) of Vambay Colony attempted suicide by jumping into Eluru canal when here husband failed to fulfil a small request to accompany her to a movie here on Sunday. Her husband, Raja Reddy, also jumped in a bid to rescue her. However, both started drowning as they cannot swim.

An APSP constable, Srinivasa Rao, showed courage to jump into the canal and rescued them.According to police, Tirupatamma took it to heart when husband Raja Reddy (20) did not take seriously her request to go to cinema to watch a movie.

She directly went near Alankar theatre and leaped into the canal. Raja Reddy also jumped to save her. Both were drowning when constable Srinivasa Rao, who was at his beat (Dharna Chowk), came to know about the incident. Immediately, rushed to the spot and save the couple from drowning.

Joint Commissioner of Police BV Ramana Kumar patted Srinivasa Rao for showing courage and saving two lives. He appreciated his work and handed over reward. Later, the couple were given counselling.
