Ongole: A Dalit organisation in the town demanded justice for the death of a dalit youth, who committed suicide on Sunday after he was tortured by some people at Medarametla four days ago.Speaking to the media, Prakasam district president of Dalita Hakkula Parirakshana Samiti, N Nagendra, said that Yerramothu Venu and Manda Prasanna Kumar were friends hailing from Korisapadu village.
He said that Prasanna Kumar used to tease a girl from Medarametla and used to follow her. On last Wednesday, Prasanna Kumar and Venu went to Medarametla on some work and the girl who saw them informed her elders in the family.
Vadlamudi Surendra and his relatives and friends stopped Venu and Prasanna Kumar to enquire about the teasing and started to manhandle them. Sensing danger, Prasanna Kumar escaped from them but the group of people caught Venu, tied him to a tree and started beating him very badly.
They also tortured him with the cigarettes the entire night. The police freed him after receiving a complaint but didn’t register any case against the attackers. Feeling ashamed about being the victim of torture, even after getting treatment for the wounds, Venu committed suicide on Sunday morning in his home at Medarametla.
Demanding justice, Nagendra said, “Those who harass women and girls should be punished through the legal system. But attacking dalits in the name of harassment of women is condemnable. The police are supporting the upper caste people and they didn’t book a case against the people who tortured Venu, thereby, leading to his suicide.”
