Vijayawada: Krishna District Collector B Lakshmikantham held a meeting with highway safety committee at the camp office on Saturday and made helmet wearing compulsory while driving two-wheelers from September 1.

He said that apart from Vijayawada city many accident deaths were reported from various parts of the district and in the recent past it was observed that fatal mishaps occurred while driving two-wheelers without wearing helmet.

Deaths due to accidents can be reduced by making helmet wearing mandatory. Similarly, people driving cars should wear seat belts and the police personnel would book cases against those who violate the rules and impose fine accordingly, he said.

Deputy transport commissioner Meera Prasad ordered all the transport officials to conduct awareness programmes at colleges, cinema theatres and public gatherings.Joint Collector G Chandradu, DCC Gajarao Bhoopal, DRO Venugopal Reddy, RDO A Chakrapani, Sai Babu, Ch Rangaiah, S Harish, engineers and others were present.
