Vijayawada: Thousands of residents living at Andhra Prabha Colony, New RR Pet, Nandamuri Nagar, Indira Nayak Nagar, Vasishta Nagar and other areas from Singh Nagar flyover bridge to Inner Ring Road have been deprived of basic facilities like roads, side drains, under ground drainage and drinking water supply.

The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation is collecting lakhs of rupees for granting housing plans but not developing infrastructure.

Rain water is being stagnated in these colonies as there are no side drains. Consequently, these open lands are turning into breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Denizens are facing many hardships due to mosquito menace. Besides, stagnated water emanating stink causing inconvenience to the public.

Due to soaring prices of land at Ayodhya Nagar, Satyanarayanapuram, Gandhi Nagar, Kedareswara Pet, people started purchasing house sites and apartment at Andhra Prabha Colony, Nandamuri Nagar, Vasista Colony, Indira Nayak Nagar and other areas for the past 10 years. The civic body collected crores of rupees in the form of development charges and house plans.

CPM former city Secretary Chigurupati Babu Rao alleged that the VMC is neglecting the development of infrastructure in these colonies. He said the TDP government had not constructed a single house in Vijayawada in three years rule and not even developing infrastructure in the colonies from Ajit Singh flyover bridge to Inner Ring Road. He said these colonies lack basic amenities like roads and side drains.

Yerubotu Sravani, 52 division corporator, said the VMC will take up side drain works as part of storm water drains in the division. She recalled that the L and T company had already started storm water drain works in the city and begin works in 52 division also.

She said the UGD works already started in some areas and will be extended to other areas also.Priya Jagadamba, 55 division corporator, said side drain works will be started soon in the division as part of storm water drain works taken up by L and T company. She said survey works have been completed for the side drains and water stagnation problem will be resolved with the completion of works.

These colonies were built in the low-lying areas. Adding insult to injury, the poor infrastructure is multiplying the problems. K R Nayudu, a resident of Nandamuri Nagar, said they had been facing many problems due to lack of proper roads. He said vehicles are struck in the mud and dirt in the rainy season and added that accidents are also taking place due to skidding of vehicles.

District Collector B lakshmikantham conducted a review meeting with the VMC engineering officials on Friday and asked the latter to complete the storm water drain works by the end of scheduled time December 2018. He expressed displeasure over slow progress of works.
