Anantapur: Communist Party of India on Sunday held a round-table conference on ‘Irrigation to crops’ in the district and urged the State government to divert 100 tmc ft of Krishna waters to Anantapur district alone to cater to the needs of district.

The meeting presided over by district CPI secretary Jagadeesh called upon the government to explore possibilities in this regard and irrigate crops both horticulture and agriculture apart from filling all the village tanks numbering about a thousand or so.

The meeting asked the government to take up Handri Neeva canal widening works without disturbing the existing structures and bridges. During the 120 flood days in Krishna river, if the existing pumping lines are doubled to 24 from 12, 100 tmc ft of water can be diverted, the meeting felt.

Once Polavaram project is completed all the surplus waters from Srisailam can be diverted to Anantapur. The meeting demanded the linking of Godavari and Penna rivers. Due to poor monsoon conditions in Karnataka and inadequate flows into Tungabhadra dam, there is no water supplies from there in the district.
