Visakhapatnam: GITAM University girls team won the Smart City Hackathon prize for their innovative idea during She Builds Tech-Smart City Hackathon jointly organised by Girls in Tech Foundation in association with APSCHE and US Consulate General Hyderabad in collaboration with IBM, AICTE and Wave Labs here in the city.

As many as 450 students are being grouped into 49 batches and can develop an idea for smart city initiatives. GITAM students, D Vilekha, V Krishna Meghana, S Swetha of Electronics and Communication department and Santhoshi Rakshita R Shivangi, Nupur Biswas of Computer Science department, GITAM Institute of Technology as a group have made winning idea among the other groups.

The idea was to develop a product Nano Sol, a paint that constitutes Nano materials. This paint can be coated on any external surface that can absorb solar energy and converts it into electrical energy. These materials can store the energy in battery and supply on demand. This is perfectly apt for a place like India as there is ample sunshine and limited power supply. Use of Nano Sol helps people reduce their electricity bill as they will be creating their own power.

This product can also be extended by connecting it to the national power grids to meet the present electricity demand. Students presented their view and created a mobile app that gives the statistics per day such as power generated, consumed, and saved amount in different seasons for efficient utilisation.

GITAM Institute of Technology Principal K Lakshmi Prasad, ECE Department Head PVY Jayasree and CSE Department Head PV Nageswara Rao and others appreciated the students for their achievement.
