Amaravati: Minister for Water Resources Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao said the State government decided to file special leave petition or public interest petition in Supreme Court against Karnataka and Maharashtra for obstructing release of Krishna water to downstream States.

He said they were consulting legal experts on future course of action. Addressing a press conference at the Secretariat on Monday, Uma Maheswara Rao said Andhra Pradesh did not get at least one tmcft of water though 275 tmcft of water was available in River Krishna due to rains in June and July.

“Upstream States did not release water even for drinking water needs of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana while they were storing hundreds of tmcft of water in reservoirs,” he alleged.The Minister also said that the AP government had already taken the issue to the notice of Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti and Union government and was also consulting legal experts to file special leave petition or public interest petition in the Supreme Court soon.

He pointed out that 471 mm of rain in Karnataka and 655 mm of rainfall in Maharashtra was recorded till now but it was only 337 mm in AP. He said 500 tmcft of surplus water flowed into sea from Godavari, Vamsadhara and Nagavali rivers this season.

The Minister also said the members of the Parliamentary Committee during their recent visit to Polvaram Irrigation Project praised the efforts of the State government in constructing various irrigation projects and they also said that there would be no drought conditions in the State with completion of projects.

He said construction works of Polavaram Project would be speeded up from December after decrease of flood situation in Godavari. “Works worth around Rs 3,800 crore have been completed in Polavaram Project till now. We have sent bills regarding the works to Polavaram Authority and officials are on consultations with Union government officials for release of funds for the project,” he said.

He also said Jalaharathi programme will be conducted at irrigation projects and other water resources in 13 districts and foundation stone would be laid for Chintalapudi lift irrigation scheme as part of this programme.
