United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has given a call for one-day strike. All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC), All India Bank Officers Association (AIBOA), National Confederation of Bank Employees (NCBE), Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI) and some other unions participated in the strike.

Banking transactions in the city came to a grinding halt as the banks downed the shutters since morning. The bank unions have already announced about the strike.Bank employees participated in the dharna staged at the SBI office in Gandhi Nagar on Tuesday. The angry bank employees raised slogans denouncing the privation of public sector banks as well as merging of some banks with the SBI.

Addressing the gathering, the speakers strongly demanded booking criminal cases against the corporate defaulters who evaded payment of loans worth thousands of crores to the public sector banks.

Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI) leader R Ajay Kumar alleged that the NDA government is adopting pro-private bank policies since it came to power. He lambasted that the Central government is trying to tarnish the image of public sector banks by campaigning that the public sector banks are inefficient and failing to achieve the results. He said pubic sector banks played an important role in the development of Indian economy and called upon the bank employees and officials to oppose the privatisation of public sector banks.

National Confederation of Bank Employees leader P L Prakash alleged that the government had failed to take action against the corporate defaulters who evaded bank loans worth more than Rs 2 lakh crore. He said the public sector banks are more reliable and collected deposits worth more than Rs 80 lakh crore.

He said the NDA government is trying to privatise these banks so that the deposits can be given as loans to corporate groups. He has made it clear that the Bank Employees Unions would oppose the moves of the Central government and would protect the banks at any cost.

The bank employees staged a dharna till 1 pm and vowed to continue their struggle opposing the policies of NDA government. Other leaders K S Rao, G Syam Babu, V R K Mohan and others spoke on the occasion.
