Tirupati: Banking operations were totally hit in the district as employees belonging to nationalised banks went on a one-day strike on Tuesday. Several bank unions under the umbrella of the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) participated in the strike in Tirupati in support of their demands. They were opposing the anti-people banking reforms and the increase in bank charges. They were also against the writing-off non-performing assets (NPAs) of corporate firms.

The employees’ unions were demanding the implementation of Parliamentary Committee recommendations on recovery of NPAs and stringent measures for recovery of bad loans. They were seeking the withdrawal of proposed Financial Resolution and Deposit Insurance (FRDI) bill, abolition of banks board bureau and adequate recruitment in all cadres.

The Unions want to resolve all the issues relating to employees. The employees staged a massive dharna before the SBI branch opposite Municipal Corporation Office here. The leaders who addressed the employees at the dharna said that they strongly oppose the privatisation of public sector banks.

The steps towards mergers and consolidation of various banks should be stopped. They also demanded not to increase the banking service charges in the name of GST. Tirupati Bank Employees Coordination Committee general secretary Dhanwant Kumar, treasurer Sumalatha, women convenor Reshma, UFBU convenor Chandrasekhar, other leaders Murthy and Prasad among others participated in the protest. Former MP Dr Chinta Mohan and CPI leader Harinath Reddy also participated in dharna and expressed their solidarity to the demands of the bank employees.

Bank employees stage stir

Chittoor: The employees of public sector banks in Chittoor city took part in one-day strike on Tuesday, as per the call given the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU). They staged a dharna at the main branch of State Bank of India here. Addressing the employees, UFBU district president G Bhaskara Reddy slammed the central and state governments for not resolving the demands of bank unions despite serving strike notice in advance.

Reddy stated that the bank managements should take stringent measures for recovery of bad loans and criminal action against willful defaulters. UFBU members Jayakumar, Purnima, and others also spoke. It may be stated here that all the ATMs have functioned in the city on Tuesday though the banks have remained close
