Eluru: Tensions prevailed at Iragavaram village, when the revenue and Wakf Board officials started auction of Wakf lands on Tuesday. The farmers objected the auction of the lands as they said they have purchased the land and attained pattadar passbooks.

As farmers gathered, police deployed to control the agitating farmers, took 30 into their custody. According to sources, about 88.67 acres of land that belongs to Wakf Board was in the hands of various farmers for over four to five decades. It is learnt that there has been buying and selling of lands between the farmers over decades. However, on a petition from the Wakf Board members, the High Court directed the officials to auction the land as it belongs to Wakf Board.

Knowing about the auction, the farmers reached the tahsil office and objected. The agitating farmers stated that they have been enjoying the lands over decades and land transactions were also taking place. On receiving information, police sent an additional force to Iragavaram village to control the agitating farmers.
