Visakhapatnam: The officials from Prohibition and Excise (Enforcement wing) on Tuesday arrested three persons, from whom they have recovered around 20 kg of opium like substance near Kothapalli village of G Madugula mandal in Visakhapatnam district.

The arrested have been identified as P Balakrishna (24), K Somaraju (25) from Gemmeli area of G Madugula mandal and S Rajayya (25) of Seethampeta in Srikakulam district.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP - Prohibition and Excise) Visakhapatnam SVVN Babji Rao said that on a tip off, the police intercepted three persons near Kothapalli area and recovered 19.75 kg of suspected opium from them.

"It is sticky, black and similar to opium. As far as we know, this cannot be opium. However, it has been sent to lab and we would confirm soon,” Babji Rao said. The excise officials are yet to ascertain from where, how they have procured the suspected opium and to where they have been transporting.

It was learnt that the smugglers were ready to hand over the suspected opium priced at Rs 50,000 per kg. Excise officials say that after it comes out of Agency, it could go for even Rs 1 lakh. A case has been registered and investigation is going on.
