Airhostess-turned-model Sangeeta Chatterjee, who was held for red sander smuggling besides illegal arms dealing, attempted suicide in the jail premises on Thursday.

Sangeeta, who is wanted in at least four cases lodged in the last three years has been charged with spreading smuggling network across six states throughout India and other countries such as Japan and China.

In May 2017, a local court in Pakala town of Chittoor district sent her to 14 days judicial custody after her arrest in March.

Known to be a close associate of notorious red sanders smuggler Markondas Lakshmanan, Sangeeta had been living with him for two years.

Sangeeta attempted suicide by consuming suspected poisonous chemicals and has been admitted in the hospital for treatment.

While her condition is said to be critical and the doctors have placed her under observation.
