Vijayawada: As many as 218 persons were killed in about 211 accidents under city police jurisdiction since January 1 this year. A total 4,271 drunk driving cases were filed by police during the same period. The number of drunkards can be much higher than what the police caught as they conduct breath analyser tests occasionally. After capital status accorded to the city, the cases of drunk driving are on the rise, says an official.

According to sources, the number of bike riders, auto drivers and those driving cars after consuming alcohol has been increasing steadily. The police teams usually conduct breath analyser test at specific points and register cases against them. All these drunkards will be produced before court which decides either to impose penalty or award imprisonment.

A fine of up to 2,500 will be imposed in a majority cases. Those who fail to pay must go to jail or do public service depending on the case.
The city stood in third place in drunk driving cases after Visakhapatnam and Nellore, said an official.

“What is there after police called for counselling. It was our prestige that received a serious dent. How to show our face to neighbours, friends and relatives,” said Jyothi (name changed), a housewife while commenting on the misdeed of her husband.

In May this year, participating in a programme, Director-General of Police Sambasiva Rao quoting a Supreme Court directive informed that the vehicle driver would have to undergo imprisonment of 10 years if he/she causes death on road.

Recently Collector B Lakshmi Kantham said road accidents and deaths in mishaps continue unabated in Krishna district. As many as 451 persons lost their lives in road accidents since January. The number of deaths during entire 2016 was 492. Rash driving, drunken driving and violation of road safety norms are some of the main reasons for accidents, he says.

In an innovative move, the police and RTA departments jointly organised a programme of providing drinking water and tea to truck drivers after helping them refresh during long journey at tollgates. If continued this effort will help drivers get alerted midway and there is a chance that they will not sleep arefully, he added.
