Tirupati: Airhostess-turned-model Sangeetha Chatterjee, who was held for red sanders smuggling, attempted suicide in Chittoor Sub-Jail on Thursday afternoon. Hailing from Kolkata in West Bengal, Sangeetha Chatterjee reportedly created scene on the jail premises with her suicide drama, sending the jail authorities into jitters.

Sangeetha, who was an accused in two cases of smuggling of red sanders, was said to have attempted suicide by consuming liquid meant for cleaning bathrooms and collapsed, according to sources. Jail security staff noticed her suicide attempt and immediately shifted her to Chittoor Government Hospital for treatment.

Her condition is said to be critical, according to doctors attending on her. The authorities ordered probe into the incident over the failure of jail staff in discharging their duties and try to find out how she accessed bathroom cleaning liquid on the jail premises.

Though Sangeetha made several pleas for bail in Chittoor court, the police prevented her attempts. Upset over not getting bail even after four months, Sangeetha, out of frustration might have attempted suicide, sources said.

Jails authorities lodged a complaint with Chittoor police on her suicide attempt.Sangeetha Chatterjee was arrested on March 28, 2017 regarding smuggling cases registered against her in Pakala police station limits in Chittoor district.
