Visakhapatnam: Leaving no space for ambiguity, District Collector Pravin Kumar confirmed that INS Viraat, the India's oldest warhorse, will be converted into a major tourist attraction on Vizag coast.

In response to the doubts raised about project cost and the feasibility, Andhra Pradesh Tourism Authority (APTA) has roped in a specialised consultancy to prepare a techno, economic feasibility (TEF) report, which helps zero-in on the cost estimations to revamp the Viraat into a hotel cum convention centre, along with commercial and entertainment spaces, he said.

Until a separate berth is developed in Vizag, the INS Viraat would be moved to Kakinada Harbour from Mumbai, where it is docked presently, the Collector added.

However, the authorities were uncertain about the cost of the project right now as the consultancy was tasked with the preparation of DPR, which is underway.

Apart from INS Viraat project, two other projects funded by Government of India include development of Buddhist Circuit in AP with Rs 110 crore and construction of passenger jetty at Bheemunipatnam under Sagaramaala scheme with Rs 49 crore fund.

It is learnt that the ambitious heli-tourism project would be taken up on a pilot basis for three months from the end of September. Based on the demand assessment, a call would be taken on whether the heli-tourism is viable or not in the area, according to VUDA VC Basanth Kumar.

In order to control the drowning deaths at the Vizag coast, safe swimming zones at RK Beach and Rushikonda Beach would be demarcated and the public are supposed to venture into the sea only in these areas. At both the zones, men with safety equipment would be deployed and watch towers would be erected. It is estimated that Rs 1.5 crore would be required to start these zones.
