Visakhapatnam: A representative of contractor, who has an agreement with King George Hospital for supplying sanitary workers, is being accused of harassing the women workers. As no action was coming either from the KGH officials or government agencies, the women are opting out of work. A case under SC, ST Atrocities (prevention) was booked against the man but the case did not deter him from harassing the workers.

Akula Rajyalakshmi, a senior sanitary supervisor, who put in 12 years of experience, is one of such victim of harassment.
“I was abused in the name of my caste and harassed sexually by Varaprasad, the supervisor of the contractor. When I lodged a complaint under SC, ST Atrocities case, I was removed from the job. Now he is asking me to withdraw the case to get back my job,’’ she told this correspondent here on Monday.

Chittemma, another victim, said she warned him when Varaprasad made sexual advances. He in turn threatened to kill her. She lodged a complaint with the police but no action was taken up.The list of victims is endless. Lavanya, Mangamma and some more women were removed from their jobs after they spurned his sexual advances.

Recently, a sanitary supervisor Ganesh, who is the assistant of Varaparasad attempted rape on Manasa (name changed) a 20-year-old worker in the KGH hospital premises. She went missing since then.

When contacted, Varaprasad said he was booked under SC and ST Atrocities Act and it is pending in the court. He also added that he removed Ganesh after he made an attempt on the 20-year-old worker.

The contract for sanitation was signed between King George Hospital and A1 Facility Services. The agency has deployed 236 workers and of them majority are women. Resident medical officer K Bangaraiah said there were some tussles between the workers and the management. But KGH is concerned over keeping the hospital premises clean.

A Dalit leader RP Raju told this correspondent that most of the women belong to Scheduled Caste and the management representatives were sexually harassing them and paying wages far below the minimum wages act.

A round-table meeting was organised by Kula Vivaksha Vyatireka Porata Samithi here on Monday and the victims of the contractor narrated their experience and why they lost the jobs.“We will meet the KGH superintendent on Tuesday and submit a representation seeking action against the contractor and his staff,’’ Raju said.
