As part of the Annual Design NASA Competition (ANDC) being organised by the National Association of Students of Architecture (NASA) across the nation, architecture department students of Andhra University set up a public space design model on the Beach Road depicting the glorious culture and tradition of Visakhapatnam.

On a small patch of land at the Beach Road, the students created a mock-up recreation space for public by placing a sail boat, a symbol of Vizag fishing community and old tyres kept for sitting surrounded by various plants.

“Building eco-friendly public parks with tinge of local culture to promote social interactions among the people is the underlying theme of this model,” said Andhra University Engineering College principal PV Avadhani.

In the cities, where people get stressed out owing to working conditions, non-commercial public spaces play a vital role to bring down the pressure, alienation and promote social harmony among all sections of the society, said architecture department head of the department Revathi.

“This project was supported by Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) – Vizag Chapter as well as architecture department alumni. Besides GVMC Commissioner M Harinarayanan, too, gave permission for setting up this on the Beach Road,” said Jayaprakash, architecture department faculty member and mentor of the project.

Architecture students of 2nd and 3rd year led by Ashwith, Bhavagni and Ravi Teja worked on the concept for two months and thereafter for preparations it took 10 to 15 days, the project mentor said and added that the design was sent to NASA on August 25.
