Vijayawada: Municipal corporation schools will get facelift with the support of NRIs, who came forward to donate dual desks, tables and chairs that will be very useful to thousands of children. A team of NRIs lead by Telugu Association of North America (TANA) met the Mayor Koneru Sridhar and offered to develop infrastructure in the schools.

The VMC is constructing toilets under the Swachh Bharat Mission and constructing classrooms with the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) funds. Now, there is requirement of more than 3,000 dual benches, tables and chairs in the VMC schools. Each dual desk costs between Rs 7,000 to Rs 8,000.

The Education department officials have estimated that 3,200 benches, tables and chairs are required for the schools. The VMC is running 28 High Schools, 76 Elementary schools and one Upper Primary school in the city. Most of the schools have pucca buildings but lacks adequate furniture.

In this backdrop, the VMC decided to take the help of NRIs and been collecting information how many tables, dual desks are needed. So far, some NGOs donated benches, tables, water filters, notebooks to the children every year. Some NGOs have adopted some schools to rendering assistance.

The VMC had spent crores of rupees for construction of building in different parts of the city and the State government is appointing qualified teachers through the DSC. Besides, the government is supplying text books free of cost every year.

But, shortage of dual benches, chairs and tables is causing lot of inconvenience to students and staff, said HM of VMC high school in Suryarao Pet. He said even teachers don’t have sufficient chairs and tables to sit and do the daily work. Recently, Municipal Administration and Urban Development department sanctioned Rs 5 lakh for development of playgrounds in VMC schools.
