In a daring day-light robbery, a  five-member inter-state gang took away three kgs of gold ornaments worth around Rs 1 crore from a gold merchant at gun point at PM Palem area in the city on Tuesday.

Visakhapatnam: In a daring day-light robbery, a five-member inter-state gang took away three kgs of gold ornaments worth around Rs 1 crore from a gold merchant at gun point at PM Palem area in the city on Tuesday.

The victim has been identified as B Venkata Ramana, native of Mangalagiri area of Guntur district and owner of Varalakshmi jewellery shop at Mangalagiri. The leader of the gang has been identified as N Rakesh, a native of Rajasthan and resident of PM Palem area in the city. Both are friends and involved in gold business.

The police said Rakesh made a call to Ramana few weeks ago and ordered gold ornaments weighing 3 kgs to open a shop in Madhuravada.
He assured to pay cash on delivery. Trusting his words, Ramana came to Vizag city on Tuesday along with the gold ornaments that were ordered. After receiving a call, Rakesh went to Railway Station to receive Ramana and took him to his residence at PM Palem.

As soon as both entered into Rakesh’s flat at PM Palem, five persons waiting in the flat beat up Ramana and tied Rakesh to a chair with a strong rope. The five member gang threatened Ramana with fire arms and sharp edged weapons and made off with 3kgs gold ornaments. The gang fled after committing the crime.

Inspector of PM Palem Police Station K Lakshmana Murthy said that the complainant Ramana managed to escape from the flat and lodged a complaint with the police around 4.40 pm. Based on the complaint the police along with clues team and dog squad visited the crime scene. Rakesh too went missing from the flat by the time the police arrived. The police officers said that it was a pre-planned offence as the accused had engaged some inter-state culprits to commit the crime. The PM Palem police registered a case and are investigating.
