Call to preserve Telugu language

- Pradyumna participates in the Telugu Language Day celebrations
- Parents advised to encourage their wards to speak in mother tongue

Chittoor: District Collector P S Pradyumna said Telugu language has rich history and it is the duty of Telugu speaking people to preserve it. The Collector participated in the Telugu Language Day celebrations here on Tuesday.

Addressing the gathering, Pradyumna said the state government is committed to preserve mother tongue by promoting it in a big way. He explained the historical importance of Telugu language by recollecting the works of great reformers. The Collector said the government has made it mandatory to follow Telugu as an official language. Telugu language should be protected, he said and added that other languages like Hindi and English should not be discriminated. Pradyumna advised parents to encourage their children to speak in mother tongue. He recalled that Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy has contributed for strengthening of Telugu language.

ZP Chairperson Girvani Chandra Prakash lamented that parents are keen to educate their children in English medium schools.

The government decided to introduce medium of instruction as English from primary level in the municipal schools. She stated the educational standards in government schools are on par with corporate educational institutions. She gave a call to propagate mother tongue by speaking in Telugu.

“There is a wrong notion that speaking in English would command respect in the society. Communicating in mother tongue will have more advantage than in English,” she added. MLA D A Satyaprabha, Mayor K Hemalatha and MLC B N Rajasimhulu also spoke. Additional Joint Collector V R Chandramouli and others were present.
