Vijayawada: The demand for organic products is on the rise in the city. Now exclusive shops for organic products were opened at various places in the city limits. Following the increasing demand, the producers of products, too, formed as an association. The association is making plans to open chain shops and super markets across the city as well as in the state. Nearly, a dozen shops of organic products were opened in the city.

Moreover, six more shops are proposed in various parts of the city under NOFA (Natural Organic Farmers Association). The innovative farmers and some section of people were using the products from long time on health conscious. The followers of Subhash Palekar, the man behind Zero Budget Natural Farming, formed as a chain and exchange the products. Now the hundreds of farmers formed into a group and cultivating natural farming and supplying their products for the stores.

G Padmaja, a social activist, started a shop at LIC Colony in the city. Several prominent persons visit the shop even though it was opened as a small establishment. Actually, she started the shop to provide good food for their children and also create market for local farmers.

Now fruits, vegetables, rice, oil, wheat and nearly hundreds food varieties are available in her store. She said that all the food varieties are being collected from the local farmers who are doing cultivating by using organic manure without utilising fertilisers and pesticides. She said that they would give the address of the farmers if customers wanted to know authenticity of produce. Siva Kumar, who also started the organic shop, one decade ago in the city.

Now, he is maintaining the shop successfully and importing the organic products from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Odisha, Karnataka, Maharastra and other states. He said that they are selling nearly 100 varieties of food items. Majority of the items are being sold with guarantee certification. He sells 20 tonnes of organic rice every year.

Similarly, some other shops are also being run with permanent customers. However, nearly 3,000 farmers are in 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh as per the estimations and customers number is also increasing day by day, says one Ch Trinath, who is creating the awareness among farmers through literature.
