Kakinada: The election to Kakinada Municipal Corporation on Tuesday went off under the shadow of the outcome of the byelection in Nandyal. The polling was by and large peaceful barring minor skirmishes between the TDP and the YSRCP. The city registered 64.78 per cent polling in 48 divisions.

The TDP and the YSRCP fought the election as main contenders while the BJP remained in the fray as an ally of the TDP. Although the BJP and TDP are beset with in-house problems, they are unlikely to threaten their winning prospects if Nandyal election is any indication.

A section of disgruntled party workers ransacked the BJP district office alleging that the party district president Y Malakondaiah had sold out seats at the rate of 5 lakh for each division. The TDP allotted divisions to the TDP in seat sharing between the allies. The BJP is feeling ill at ease with the TDP over the presence of latter’s rebel candidates in the divisions allotted to it.

The YSRCP targeted the TD government during the campaign for its hallow promises with respect to developing the city as a smart city with Rs 500 crore over a period of five years.

The funds released under the project failed to cross Rs 20 crore in the last two years. Similarly, the Opposition charged that the promise of establishing petroleum university also failed to become a reality. The university proposal was aimed to boost the employment potential in oil and gas exploration activity in the KG basin. But the government thoroughly disappointed the jobless educated youths by failing to implement its promise, Jagan said at an election rally. Jagan drew huge crowds for his meetings during the campaign.

It is to be seen whether his crowd puller image will help him translate his popularity into votes. “We could find some feel good factor until the Nandyal election result was out. There appears no such hope now,” commented a district-level YSRCP leader while talking to The Hans India. He said spending of money lavishly by the ruling party may alter the equations, he added.
