Guntur: The Guntur Municipal Corporation launched ‘Domalapai Dandayatra’ (war on mosquitoes) programme in the city on Tuesday following instructions from District Collector and GMC special officer Kona Sashidhar.

GMC Commissioner Challa Anuradha launched the programme at a meeting held within the Guntur East Assembly constituency limits. She flagged off a rally conducted to create awareness among the people on the programme. The students of the GMC schools were present in large numbers.

Speaking on this occasion, Anuradha said that mosquitoes were spreading viral fevers and to check this menace, there was a need to keep the surroundings clean. She further said that the GMC launched the programme to explain the precautionary measures to be taken to check the spread of the fevers caused mosquitoes.

She said that the 34 special teams which were set up by the GMC will visit at least fifty houses per day to create awareness. She said that the public health department would conduct fogging and anti-larva operations to kill the mosquitoes breeding in the water.

She they will release gambusia fishes and oil balls in the water to kill mosquito breeding in the water and said they are cleaning the side drains. She urged the owners of the vacant lands to clean them up and sought the co-operation of the public to make the programme a success.

She said that initially, they would be focussing on the slums. She said that the GMC would be distributing pamphlets. Deputy Commissioner Srinivasa Rao, TDP Guntur East in-charge Maddali Giridhar and others were present.
